There are other places to stay in Andros, but we've always stayed in the Karaoulanis apartments, and can't think of anywhere nicer to be. You can find more details about the apartments, plus information on the other things they do - such as boat and bike hire - at their website Andros Location.
As a result of our attachement to these particular apartments, we don't know much about any other accomodation in Chora. There isn't a huge amount of it - the majority of which is out behind Nimborio beach, where you'll find rooms to rent and a couple of small hotels. Several of these look very nice. There are also a couple of hotels in Chora itself.
We'd really recommend Karaoulanis apartments. They are spacious, comfortable, well equipped, tastefully decorated and good value. They are run by Yanni, his French wife, Caroline, and Yanni's Mum. They are really friendly and welcoming, and will be able to give you lots of information about the island. Yanni and Caroline both speak excellent English.
They rent out apartments in two different areas - a big old house close to Nimborio beach,
and in a purpose built building up on the hill at the top of the town.
On our first couple of visits we stayed in the apartments close to Nimborio beach, just opposite 'O Nonos' taverna. These are in a lovely old house, a few steps away from the waterfront quay and close to the heart of the old town.
There's a terrace along the front of the apartments, with enough space to sit out and have breakfast. You look out across the bay, and are just a few minutes walk away from the tavernas at the start of Nimborio beach.
There are three apartments and some rooms, all modernised to a really high standard. Yanni's Mum and Dad, who don't speak a lot of English, but who are always friendly and helpful, live at the back.
Since the new apartments have been built, we've been staying there. These are slightly bigger, and have larger, private terraces.
They are in the Anemomilous district, a quiet, residential part of town. It's a bit further away from things, but still only about 15 minutes walk to the centre of Chora.
Yanni, Caroline and their two daughters live in the top apartment.
The apartment we stay in has a great view over a green valley and out across the mountains. It gives you a sense of the countryside around Chora and is a very peaceful place to be.
